Campagnolo Announces New Road Tubeless Wheels

August 1st, 2008

In 2009 Campagnolo will embrace tubeless technologies with two wheels: Shamal Ultra 2-Way Fit and Eurus 2-Way Fit. The 2-Way Fit moniker refers to the wheels’ ability to accept tubeless or standard clincher type tires. Campagnolo convinced itself of the merits of tubeless with internal testing.

Campagnolo believed the features presented by Hutchinson in its release of tubeless road tires (Comfort, resistance to pinching and safety if punctured) were impressive, but what convinced it to participate is the improvement in rolling resistance. Campagnolo believes tubeless tires reduce a wheel’s rolling resistance by 31 percent.

Campagnolo realizes that tubeless tires are still rare and that there is still indecisiveness on the part of tire manufactures surrounding the technology. For this reason, it decided not to build a wheelset that would only work for tubeless, but also offer compatibility with standard clinchers.

“TRO BRO LEON – FUSION 2 TUBELESS tires win in Brittany”

April 28th, 2008

Frédéric Guesdon (Française des Jeux) has won the Tro Bro Leon race in the sprint while racing on Fusion 2 Road Tubeless tires.

To better roll on the dirt and graveled roads of Brittany, all of the Française des Jeux used Fusion 2 Tubeless tires during the Tro Bro Leon which is known as the Paris Roubaix of Brittany. Conditions were especially wet and muddy on the narrow roads in which the race is held.

Many of the competing teams had multiple punctures. Andrezj Pozak, one of the FDJ’s team mechanics said the race was without mechanical incidents. “The only stess was the final palpitation of Frédéric Guesdon.” The FDJ team finished with three riders in the top 10 finishers. Winner Frédéric Guesdon ; Lilian Jégou and Yauheni Hutarovich finished in 4th and 10th places respectively.

It’s been the 4th victory for Fusion 2 Road Tubeless this season after the success of Phillipe Gilbert (Het Volk, Grand Prix Samyn) and Yauheni Hutarovich (2nd stage of the Tour des Flandres Occidentales and the overall final classification).

All about Road Tubeless

RACE WINNING

Since the beginning of the season, Hutchinson has won 8 victories with the Française des Jeux and 3 with Scott Saunier Duval on Fusion Road Tubeless
Philippe Gilbert : Het Volk and Grand Prix Samyn
Yauheni Hutarovich, won the second stage and the overall classification of the Trois Jours des Flandres Occidentales.

EASE of INSTALLATION
Without tubes, mounting is simple by hand simple is with pneu Hutchinson StickAir.
Following installation instructions, Hutchinson clinchers are known to be easy to mount.
With TUBELESS, not having the a tube or rim strip makes tire installation even easier.

THE CASING
Body of the tire is composed of:
127 TPI bias thread
The casing is reinforced at the beads which helps resist pressure and protects against punctures on the sidewalls.

CARBON BEAD
New Carbon bead provides the necessary strength for the Road Tubeless concept to work.

SEALING
A layer of compound placed in the interior of the casing guaranties the tubeless tire perfect sealing. Specially formed dompound around the bead assures a total seal between the rim and the hook of the tire.

TREAD
3 types of compound «Triple Compound» are used in the Fusion 2 Road Tubeless tread.

• In the center, the compound wears longer.
• First leaning zone, a compound that grips the road while cornering.
• Second leaning zone, high-rebound compound that holds the road surface during intense cornering demands.
• The new TRIPLE COMPOUND technology allows three compounds with different properties to create the best performing tire possible.
• The hard compound at the center augments the life of the tire and resistance to cuts and perforations while providing a low rolling resistance.
• Finally the side compounds offer unequaled grip for cornering and tight turns which gives the rider the ultimate confidence in his tires.

PERFORMANCE AND COMFORT
Triple Compound: 3 compounds optimized for wear and progressive adhesion while cornering.

Philippe Gilbert Interview

March 15th, 2008

After his two récent victories at the Het Volk and the Grand Prix of Samyn while riding Fusion 2 Road Tubeless Tires

Hutchinson : You won the Het Volk with panache. Almost unnoticed by the public was the fact that you rode the race on tubeless tires. Is this new ?

Philippe Gilbert : Yes, I’d tested the tires in training a few days before the Het Volk. I liked them, especially on the cobbles I found them efficient and very comfortable.

- The tires must have felt good enough to use them again three days later to take a another victory on them ?

- At the GP of Samyn the roads were bad and I felt good about using Tubeless

- Do you know that the Tubeless tires are manufactured a few kilometers from hère ?

- Yes, I’ve passed in front of the factory. If I had the time, it would have been nice to visit. Perhaps next time.

- So, in the end tubulars or tubeless ?

This dépends on the conditions. We’ve been amazed by the Tubeless tires. We will test them again in Flanders at the 3 Days of the Panne, The Tour of Flanders, and Ghent-Wevelgem.

The team racing this week at Tirreno-Adriatico is also testing Tubeless. It will be interesting to get together and share their newest impressions of tubeless tires.

“Phillippe Gilbert solos to Het Volk win on Road Tubeless”

March 1st, 2008

After a pre-race reconnaissance of the Het Volk parcours using Fusion 2 Road Tubeless tires, Martial Gayant, director sportif for FDJ gave the go-ahead for the team to use them in the race. The result? Top podium place by Philippe Gilbert in a sensational solo ride. Gilbert got away 49 km from the finish and never looked back.

The Fusion 2 tires performed impeccably on the cobbled sections thanks to the fact that you can run them at a lower more comfortable pressure. It was Gilbert’s second win in this first semi-classic of the season.
